Old Pond – Matsushima, ah!

opmatsushima

Basho writes about his visit to Matsushima in his haibun The Narrow Road to the Deep North.

Matsushima is one of the most beautiful landscape in Japan. Just imagine: hundreds of islands covered with pine trees!

Upon seeing one of the most famous views in Japan, Basho composed the following haiku:

Matsushima, ah!

Aah, Matsushima, ah!

Matsushima, ah!

— Basho
